We put our name to the way we fit every rooflight. When the job is finished, you are handed a written 10-year workmanship guarantee along with the rest of your paperwork. This page explains what it covers, what sits outside it, and what to do if you ever need to use it.
What the guarantee covers
The guarantee covers our workmanship on the installation for ten years from the date of handover. That means all of the work we carried out to get the rooflight into your roof, as follows:
- Forming the opening. Cutting and trimming the rafters, framing the opening and building any upstand on a flat roof.
- Fixing the unit. Securing the frame to the structure so that it sits true and stays put.
- Weathering it into the roof. The flashing, the membrane and the roof covering around the unit, so that water is carried away from the frame as it should be.
If a fault shows up during those ten years that comes from the way we did any of that work, we will come back and put it right at no cost to you.
How it sits with the makers' warranties
The products we fit, such as roof windows, rooflights, lanterns, sun tunnels, glass units, motors and blinds, carry their makers' own warranties. Those cover the product itself: the glass, the seals, the frame and any moving or electrical parts. The length and terms vary from maker to maker.
At handover we give you the product details and the warranty information for everything we have fitted, so you have it all in one folder. If something goes wrong with a product, get in touch with us first. We will help you work out whether it is a workmanship matter or a product matter and, if it is the second, who to contact and what they will need.
What the guarantee does not cover
To keep things clear, these sit outside the workmanship guarantee:
- normal wear and tear over time
- damage caused by storms, falling objects or other severe weather events
- damage caused by third parties, including other trades working on the roof or in the room
- alterations, adjustments or work on the unit or the roof around it carried out by anyone other than us
- faults in the products themselves, which fall under the makers' warranties described above
Damage from storms or accidents is normally a matter for your home insurance, and the photographs and paperwork we give you at handover can help with that.
How to make a claim
If you think something is wrong with the way your rooflight was fitted, the steps are simple:
- Get in touch. Email info@prestigeskylightsyork.co.uk or send us a message on WhatsApp on 07880 284133.
- Send photographs. A few pictures of the problem, inside and outside if you can see it safely, help us understand it before we visit. Please do not go onto the roof.
- We arrange a visit. We will agree a time to come and look, and we will tell you what we find and what happens next.
Please have your guarantee paperwork to hand, or tell us the address and roughly when the work was done, and we will find the job in our records.
What we ask of you
A rooflight looks after itself for the most part, but a little care keeps it working as it should and keeps the guarantee straightforward:
- Keep gutters and outlets clear. Blocked gutters and flat roof outlets let water back up around the frame.
- Clean the glass. Wash it from time to time, following the care notes we leave, and keep leaves and debris off flat rooflights.
- Tell us early. If you notice staining, a draught or anything that does not look right, let us know straight away. A small problem raised early is far easier to deal with.
If you sell your home
The guarantee stays with the property for the rest of its ten years. If you sell, pass the guarantee paperwork on to the buyer along with the Building Control completion documents and the product warranties. The new owner can then contact us in exactly the same way.
